School of Computer Science and IT’s collaboration with industry

The School of Computer Science and IT (CSIT) understands the importance of collaborating with industry. It enables us to keep up to date with the latest trends and technologies and also assists us with keeping abreast of what graduate skill sets are in demand.

The School holds quarterly Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) meetings each year. Representatives from industry give valuable feedback on the suitability of our courses and programs. The Committee also serves as a forum for the school to discuss new programs and course amendments – it is RMIT policy that all new programs are recommended by this committee before they proceed.

Furthermore, the Committee provides a set of industry contacts that assists the School with research projects, intern placements, scholarships, and awards.

Industry Events

Each year, the School and industry work together to produce a series of events for the benefit of all CSIT students. Through events such as careers expos, information sessions, awards, and workshops, industry representatives have the opportunity to meet with many of our students.

Software Engineering Internship Year

Over the last five years, many businesses in the IT industry have provided a 12-month industry placement to our third-year students in the Bachelor of Software Engineering program.

The feedback from industry and our observation of the students indicate that the program serves both parties very well.

For students, it provides an opportunity to consolidate and integrate their learning within a work environment before returning for their final year.

For industry, it provides 12-month access to technically astute and highly motivated young people who can provide fresh perspectives and new ideas. It is a chance to trial prospective employees. It also gives companies the flexibility to handle bigger workloads, free up other staff working on tasks of high priority, or to cover long-term absences of permanent staff.

All students entering Software Engineering have a TER score of 90 per cent or higher. They are bright, technically astute and highly motivated young people eager to test themselves in the workplace.

For further details on the internship program and opportunities for collaborative industry projects, view the Software Engineering Internship brochure (PDF). You can also contact Peter McDonald for further information.
